Ed Jontos was an outstanding athlete at Syracuse University. He would letter in football as an offensive guard, letter in lacrosse as a defenseman, and was the captain of both teams his senior year. He was an honorable mention All-American in lacrosse his senior year.
Jontos played basketball at Syracuse to stay in shape for his other sports, and was a reserve forward his sophomore season. He would play in two games and not score.
Jontos would graduate from Syracuse in 1936 with a B.S., and St. Bonaventure in 1939 with a M.S. Jontos would serve as an assistant football and lacrosse coach at Syracuse from 1936 to1937, and then an assistant football and basketball coach at St. Bonaventure from 1937-1942.
Jontos would server in World War II in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Lt. Commander.
He would become the head football coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1946, and hold the position until 1952, with a cumulative record of 19-35-2.. He was also the head lacrosse coach at RPI from 1961 to 1969 with a record of 51-49, the head golf coach from 1949 to 1960, and the freshman basketball coach from 1949 to 1966. He would serve as RPI's Director of Physical Education from 1965 to 1972.[1]
Jontos was elected to the RPI Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. He was honored as a Syracuse University Letterwinner of Distinction in 1975.
