Darryl Watkins was a starting center for Syracuse basketball for two seasons. 'Mookie' came to the Hill as a tall center, with great athletic ability but little polished basketball skills. He would develop into a solid shot blocker with good defensive skills, a decent rebounder, but limited on the offensive end.
Watkins would see little playing time his freshman season with Craig Forth the starting center, and senior Jeremy McNeil his solid backup. Watkins would be Forth's primary backup his sophomore season. He would provide Syracuse with some depth at center, and with his athletic style, help change the defensive chemistry on the court. Watkins would break his thumb in December that season, and it would retard his overall development for that year.
Watkins became the starting center for Syracuse his junior season. He was slowly developing his offensive skills, pretty much keeping his scoring opportunities near the basket. It was his defensive presence and rebounding the team was counting on. While not spectacular, Watkins was becoming a good rebounder, and defensively his shot blocking (2.8/g) was intimidating. His big problem was that he was still foul prone, fouling out of eight games, and seeing his playing time limited in other games, forcing him to miss about 10 minutes each game.
Watkins would continue to be a top shot blocker his senior season, though the foul troubles continued, fouling out of eight games. He had a tendency to play very well against bigger and more talented players, and struggled against smaller players. He would be inconsistent in this rebounding, having some games with 10 to 13 rebounds, and then others with a couple. Against South Florida he had his best offensive game, leading the team in scoring with 17 points.
Watkins would go undrafted in the 2007 NBA draft, but would be signed by the Sacramento Kings as an undrafted free agent. Watkins would make the team to start the season, playing while the Kings had a couple of players injured. He would play the rest of his rookie season in the NBDL.
