DeShaun Williams was a good shooting guard, whose three year basketball career at Syracuse was full of controversy on and off the court.
Williams made an impact at Syracuse as a freshman as reserve three point specialist. He would come into the game giving a break to Tony Bland, and provide some three point shooting, hitting nearly 42% of this perimeter shots.
Williams would become a starter his sophomore season, replacing Tony Bland who had transferred. Williams would team with Preston Shumpert to provide Syracuse was a 1-2 three point shooting punch. He however had a reputation of not practicing hard, and frequent fouls and turnovers were signs of that.
As a junior, coach Boeheim started Williams as the point guard to being the season, hoping to be able to get freshman Hakim Warrick into the starting lineup at forward. Williams wasn't a very good ball handler, not a good decision maker, but the team was winning anyhow because of strong individual performances from Shumpert and Williams. Tired of the poor teamwork, Boeheim moved Williams back to shooting guard in mid season, and inserted James Thues as the point guard. Unfortunately, the team fell apart as a result of off the court problems between Shumpert and Williams.
Williams entire junior season was fraught full of off court problems, including numerous bar fights, and other unsavory incidents. He had never been a serious student, and was academically ineligible to play at the end of the year. Tired of his off court antics, and his academic problems, Williams was asked to leave the university.
Williams would be named to the Big East Third team his junior season, and would be a thousand point scorer at Syracuse.
He would later enroll at Iona College and play in the 2004-2005 season for his senior year, and would have the highest point per game total on the team.
