Dick Conover was a speedy guard for Syracuse for three seasons. He was a good ball handler and possessed a nice outside shot. He also played outfield for the varsity baseball team for three seasons, lettering his senior year.
Conover was a reserve guard his sophomore season. He would start two games late in the season in victories over Colgate and Canisius, when Ed Goldberg was injured and unable to play. He would start seven games his junior season and was a valuable third guard on the Orangemen.
Conover was named captain of the team his senior season, and would start every game. The Orangemen were a small team that year, and so the speedy guards of Conover and Goldberg had to push the ball up the court quickly. Conover would have a career high 21 points in a win over LaSalle on January 13, 1960. He would hit two free throws in the remaining fifteen seconds to clinch an upset victory over Holy Cross on February 26.
