Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute was the first varsity basketball team that the Syracuse Orangemen ever played. The RPI Engineers won the game easily 21-8 in Troy, New York. The two teams met regularly from 1908 to 1922.
RPI won the first three games of the series, while Syracuse has won the last 9. Syracuse played six consecutive road games against RPI from 1916 to 1922 with the Orangemen winning all six.
The two teams have not played since 1947.
