The Syracuse Orangemen and Houston Cougars first met in 1982. The game was against Houston's famed 'Phi Slamma Jamma' team with Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon. Syracuse would win the game 92-87. The Cougars would go on to lose the National Championship that spring in the famous upset by Jim Valvano's North Carolina Wolfpack.

Syracuse would next meet the Cougars in the Sweet Sixteen in the 2021 NCAA tournament. The #2 seeded Cougars would control the Orange throughout most of the game ending Syracuse's Cinderella run in the tournament.

Syracuse would face #3 ranked Houston in the 2025 Players Era Festival. The Orange trailed 67-58 with 3:06 remaining before they scored the last 11 points in regulation to tie the game up and send it to overtime. Houston would go on to win in the extra period. Syracuse shot 12-29 (41%) from the free throw line.
