Bill Stearns played guard for part of one season at Syracuse. He originally played basketball at Cortland State Teachers College, matriculating in September 1952. He enrolled at Syracuse in the fall of 1956, but did not play basketball until 1957. Stearns played in seven of the first sixteen games of the season, when it was discovered that he was no longer eligible to play intercollegiate athletics as five years had passed since he first started college.
Syracuse was liable to forfeit all seven games that Stearns had played, three of which they had won. However, Canisius, Georgetown, and Army, the three teams that were beaten when Stearns played, declined the forfeits, leaving Syracuse with the wins.
