Bill Sanford was a reserve forward on the Syracuse basketball team for his junior season. He was more well renown for his career in crew.
Sanford served active duty in the U.S. Army prior to coming to Syracuse, from 1957 to 1959.
He participated on the freshman crew team his first year at Syracuse, and then was a star on the varsity crew team for three years. He was captain of this crew team his senior year.
Sanford came out and helped the Syracuse basketball team his junior year, during a time where injuries and suspensions had hurt the roster.
He would graduate from Syracuse in 1963, and later would earn his Masters in Psychology.
Sanford was the Syracuse freshman crew coach from 1964 to 1967. In 1968, he became the head coach of the Syracuse varsity crew team, a position he would hold for 34 seasons. He won the IRA (National Championship) in 1978, and his varsity four also won the national championship in 1980. [1]
Sanford was elected to the Onondaga County Legislature in 1979 and was re-elected five times. He would retire as the Syracuse crew coach in 1990 as he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He was named a Syracuse Letterwinner of Distinction in 1990.
