Bill Lowe was the captain of the first Syracuse University basketball team. The team played only four games the first year, and Lowe played every minute of all four games. He was the center, and the designated free throw shooter. As there was no coach, Lowe was in charge of the team during games.
'High Bill' Lowe was an outstanding high jumper on the track team for three seasons, and lettered in track in 1901. He set the college record for the high jump at 6' 1 7/8", and won the high jump at the intercollegiate track championship in 1902. Lowe also held the college record for the 120 yard hurdles, with a time of 16 seconds. [1]
He was one of the original members of the famed Buffalo German AAU team, prior to coming to Syracuse.
Lowe became a German Professor at Syracuse University. He would often officiate Syracuse home basketball games. He was the assistant coach of the Syracuse track team from 1904-1908.
